"Writing Her Own Story in Giving - Tabloid Heiress Lois B. Pope Champions
Medicine, Disabled Veterans." Chronicle of Philanthropy. November 30,
2000. Vol.13, No.4. p(p): 9. The death of Generoso Pope Jr. in 1988
had an ironic twist worthy of the National Enquirer tabloid he created.
During his lifetime, Mr. Pope was a frequent donor and a major fund
raiser for a medical center near his Florida home. He died of a heart
attack en route to a hospital in the rescue vehicle he had donated himself.
Today, his widow who had helped her husband run the newspaper as its
art director for 12 years, is using her share of the money from the
newspaper's sale to carry on her husband's tradition of philanthropy.
Instead of taking her inheritance and retiring to her mansion near Palm
Beach, Florida, Mrs. Pope created a charity called LIFE (Leaders in
Furthering Education). She is a passionate supporter of research into
spinal cord injuries, in part through her friendship with actor Christopher
Reeve. She says, "No more wheelchairs, that's my motto."
